Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) requires completing three essential stages. The first stage is the theory test, which includes 100 multiple-choice questions across four sections. You must answer at least 85% correctly to pass. Alongside this is the hazard perception test, where you watch video clips and identify potential hazards within a strict timeframe, earning points for accuracy and reaction time. Passing this stage demonstrates your understanding of driving theory and hazard awareness, forming the foundation for safe instruction.
The second stage is the advanced driving test, designed to ensure you can drive to a high standard. Passing this test proves that you have the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to teach learner drivers safely and effectively.
After completing the advanced test, you can apply for a pink trainee instructor badge, which allows you to begin teaching pupils while gaining the necessary experience to progress to the final stage.
The final stage, the ADI Part 3 test, assesses your teaching ability in two parts. The first part involves instructing a complete beginner, explaining each step in detail to make learning clear and straightforward. The second part focuses on teaching a more experienced learner, adjusting your instruction to their ability, reinforcing their existing knowledge, and providing additional guidance to improve overall driving competence.

Once you have passed your practical driving test, you then have the opportunity to increase your driving experience with pass plus. It is a course designed to give you experience of different road situations, it covers six modules:

Each different module will last at least 1 hour, to ensure that the subject is covered fully. Most of the above will have been covered within your normal driving lessons, with pass plus it puts more emphasis on driving positively and looking at a range of different situations.
Once you have passed all the different modules, you will then be given a certificate (Which is issued by the dsa) this then will be used to get discount with various insurance companies.
